Ah, it’s green, it is.   As we prepare for Saint Patrick’s Day, we dig out our favorite green costumes, hats, glasses and dream about green beer and the fun we will have.  Of course, the most obvious costume idea for adults on St. Paddy's is the good old fashioned Leprechaun.  Don't forget a  fabulously green costume hat to complete the perfect Leprechaun. But, you know there are many other costume choices for the Irish theme and here are some of our suggestions:

You could dress up like a faerie, and you know that we love to… And these days, there are so many wonderful faerie costumes available, in all kinds of colours and styles with fancy wings or simple wings. Accessorize it the way you want and don't forget the glitter.  Check out the nice green "Wood Nymph" fairy costume for ladies, or maybe the bright green girls Tinkerbell fairy costume for the little lady in your house.

Great non-green costume for Saint Patty's Day - a screaming Banshee

So you ask, what is a Banshee?  Well, I suppose dressing up like a legendary Irish harbinger of death might be a bit dark for Saint Patrick’s Day, but some of us are quite dark year-round, aren’t we?  A screaming banshee could be represented in a number of forms.  She could be a washing woman, a young woman or a dire zombie-like scary old woman, to create the costume begin with at least a wispy white ghost cape.  But, you must be warned, if it is possible that you might run into some with the last name of O’Grady, O’Neill, O’Brien, O’Connor or Kavanagh, you may be less than welcome. (There is some legend there)

Okay, so you say that you aren’t feeling on the dark side today?  Well, then my favorite would be to dress up as a pot of gold!  In legend, the Pot of Gold has been left at the end of the rainbow by the little ones.  But, if the little ones are actually leprechauns, I’m not so sure you should spend too much time searching for that pot of gold, they are quite notorious for being practical jokers.  But, back to the costume … won’t you be a happy sight in the pub on Saint Patrick’s Day all dressed up in a pot of gold costume.  So, what do you need to create a Pot o’ Gold Costume?  Well, lots of gold, a gold top, some gold chains (make that lots of gold chains and/or beads), a gold tinsel wig, some funky big gold sunglasses.  You might want to add a lucky touch and make sure there is a shamrock in there too.



All in all, St. Paddy’s day is fun and simply making sure that you have something green on will do the job.  There are so many fun St. Paddy’s hats, costumes, glasses available, you can be ready for the day at a very low cost … which of course means that your gold coins are freed up for green beer … or my preference, Guinness.  And, by the way, this year CostumeChik has Guinness hats that you can buy online in Canada!
